Nepal is a small country with diversity in geography, ethnicity, language, religion, tradition, culture, economic condition etc. It is inhabited by diverse ethnic and caste groups having different religion, culture, tradition and language. Because of this ethnic, religious and cultural diversity, it is called as a multi caste and multi lingua country in Asia. There are 125 caste/ethnic groups reported in national census of 2011AD. Despite the prevalent diversity, there is unity among them in many respects which has played an important role in national integration. To achieve the task of national integration, all the ethnic groups are sharing the values in which the cultural aspirations of each groups are reflected.
Among these multi ethnic groups, one major ethnic group is none other than the NEWARS. Newars are the indigenous people of Kathmandu and the creatures of its historic civilization. Newars are dwelling there since prehistoric time. The valley and the surrounding territories have been known from the ancient time as Nepal Mandal. According to the national population census 2011, Newars rank 6th largest ethnic group of the country comprising 5% of national total population.
Again, newer caste itself comprises over hundred sub castes/classes/groups with different surnames. The religion they follow, the traditions and the culture they do have, the occupations they follow has diversities. As such newer it is a caste with diversities. Within Hindu Newars, there are Brahmins like Rajopadhyaya, who are on top of the newer social hierarchy. The second group is the Shrestha. Other groups are bajracharya and shakya, uray, maharjan, and Sudra.
What actually the word caste signifies then, “Castes are groups with well developed life of their own, the membership where of, unlike that of voluntary associations and of classes determined not by selection but by birth. The status of a person depend not on his wealth but on the traditional importance of the caste in which he had luck of being born”
.In this context Shrestha are one of the most dynamic newer community, excelled in different professional carriers. They are registered as highest class caste among Newars in Nepal. Shrestha is a newer surname meaning excellent or noble. The word Shrestha is derived from Nepal Bhasa word SYASYAH. Considering this Nepal Bhasa word, to represent different community of Shrestha less than one single roof, the word syasyah is selected for its identity while setting up the samaj. Syasyah are group with well developed life of their own culture, traditions, and customs. In this way to cover up all the syasyah, syasyah SAMAJ was formed. In a real context, as it covers Nakabahil Illaka, a part of syasyah Samaj Yala, It is named as Syasyah Samaj Yala Nakabahil Illaka.
